Grandpa Was One Move from a Jump. Juniper Was Watching Closely

The checkers are lined up, red against black, and Gus is leaning over the board, working out his next move. On the other side of the table, Juniper has rested her chin on the edge, eyes fixed on the pieces and ears slightly back in concentration. A string of porch lights glows overhead, the fence and trees fade into evening, and a row of potted plants watches from the railing. Gus has the faintest smile, the look of a man who knows he has the upper hand, or at least thinks he does.

Board games are a great way to spend time with older adults, and a quiet cat nearby adds a calm feeling to the table. Cats are especially drawn to small moving objects, so don't be surprised if a paw darts out toward a sliding piece. Keep small game pieces out of reach, since cats can swallow or chew them, and offer a toy of her own so she feels included. A cat who rests her chin on a table is usually relaxed and interested rather than upset.

Juniper may not know the rules of checkers, but she follows each move with great interest, especially when a piece slides. Gus seems to be thinking about a jump, and she looks ready to lodge a protest if it goes badly. It is a perfect porch evening, with a game still very much in progress.
