Otis Lit the Lantern on the Dock and Pepper Took the Front Seat
The lantern glows at the end of the dock, the water has gone dark, and Otis sits with his fishing gear at his side and a warm smile behind his glasses. Pepper has planted herself right in front, staring straight ahead with huge dark eyes, her whiskers wet with the evening air. Lights flicker through the trees on the far shore, and the weathered boards beneath her paws are mossy and old. A small tackle box sits open nearby, and a fishing rod leans against the post where he left it.
Fishing trips are fun with a dog, but they take planning. Hooks, lures, and line are dangerous if a dog gets near them, so keep tackle in a closed box and out of reach. A dog on a leash is safer near water, and a small dog like a Shih Tzu can slip between boards or tumble off an edge, so a harness is a wise idea. Bring fresh water and a blanket for when the evening gets chilly. A calm dog and a quiet spot can make fishing a lovely shared hobby.
Pepper isn't paying much attention to the fish. She seems to be in charge of making sure nothing sneaks up from behind. Otis lets the line rest, and the lantern hums, and the night settles in gently around them. The night is just beginning.
