Every Young Goat Needs a Mountain. This One Found a Bernese.
Every young goat needs a mountain to conquer, and this one has found a soft, warm and very patient one. A big tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog lies flat on the backyard patio, chin on the ground and soulful brown eyes looking up, while a little white and tan baby goat stands squarely on the dog's fluffy black back, front hooves planted and ears perked as it surveys its kingdom. Rosemary grows in a pot nearby, a pair of muddy sneakers sits by the fence, and a blue bowl rests in the background.
Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred in Switzerland as farm dogs, pulling carts and guarding livestock, so a calm attitude around barnyard animals fits their history well. They are known for being gentle, loyal and affectionate, especially with family. Their thick double coat sheds a lot and benefits from frequent brushing, and they are more comfortable in cool weather than hot. Berners are a large breed with a shorter life expectancy, and they can be prone to joint issues, so letting a goat use them as a jungle gym should be kept brief. Sturdy climbing platforms make a better long-term play area for active kids.
Still, it is impossible not to admire this level of patience. The goat feels on top of the world, and the Bernese seems content to be the world.
