A Picnic Blanket on the Patio, and Only Two Guests Showed Up
A blue and white checked picnic blanket has been spread across the patio, and the only guests who showed up are fast friends. A spotted Dalmatian lies flat with its head resting on its paws, one ear flipped back and eyes looking drowsily up, while a white baby goat with tan markings on its face curls up right against the dog's shoulder, eyes half shut. Behind them, a cream stucco house, potted plants by the door, a pair of boots on the step and a wooden fence frame a calm, golden-hour scene.
Dalmatians are athletic, energetic dogs once known as carriage dogs, trotting alongside horse-drawn coaches and guarding stables. That history around horses and barns may help explain why many Dalmatians are comfortable around livestock. They need plenty of exercise and consistent training to be well-mannered companions. The breed is known to have a higher risk of deafness, and they also have a unique way of processing certain proteins that can make them prone to urinary stones, so diet and fresh water are important topics to raise with your vet. Dalmatian puppies are born pure white, with their spots developing over the first weeks of life.
The picnic food may never have arrived, but this blanket is serving its purpose beautifully. Spots, stripes or patches, a good friend is a good friend.
