A Spotted Bengal Leaned Down From the Windowsill to Meet Some Very Small Visitors

Gray light filters through the old window, and on its wide, paint-chipped sill a spotted brown Bengal has stretched out to meet some very small visitors. The cat lowers his head, whiskers forward and eyes soft, toward six yellow ducklings gathered on a rumpled knit blanket just below him. The nearest duckling tips its bill up to return the greeting, while the others huddle close and watch. A pair of reading glasses, a cactus in a clay pot, and a few household odds and ends sit on the sill beside them, with misty rooftops visible outside.

Bengals get their striking spotted and marbled coats from their ancestry, which traces back to crosses between domestic cats and the small wild Asian leopard cat. Today's Bengals are domestic pets, but many still have a lot of energy and a strong curiosity. They are often athletic, playful, and very intelligent, and some are known for enjoying water more than the average cat. A Bengal usually thrives with plenty of climbing space, daily interactive play, and puzzle toys. Without enough stimulation, they may make their own fun by opening cabinets or knocking things off shelves.

At this moment, though, all that energy has been set aside for something gentler. The Bengal's wild-looking coat is quite a contrast to his tender, curious greeting, and the ducklings seem perfectly comfortable with their spotted new neighbor on the sill.
