Snowball and Patch Sit Close and Study the Frost on the Glass
Frost has drawn feathery ferns across the glass, and two friends sit close to watch it. A white Samoyed with a soft, smiling face and thick coat rests on a woolly blanket, and a calico cat with patches of orange, black and white tucks in at his shoulder. Their eyes are both turned toward the cold window, and a warm lamp glows in the room behind them.
We could call them Snowball and Patch. Snowball's coat is almost the same shade as the frost, and Patch's colors add a warm splash against all the white. Together they look as if they have settled in for a long, peaceful winter morning.
Samoyeds were bred in Siberia to herd reindeer and pull sleds, and their thick double coats keep them comfortable in the cold, which also means they can overheat in warm rooms. They are friendly, social dogs that often dislike being left alone. Calico cats are mostly female and get their patchwork colors from genetics, not breed, so their personalities vary just like any other cat. In winter, make sure pets have warm bedding away from drafts and cold windowsills, and check that heaters and radiators are guarded. After outdoor walks, wipe paws to remove any ice melt, which can irritate skin.
Outside it may be freezing, but in here Snowball and Patch have everything they need.
