A Basset Hound and a Ginger Cat Were in No Hurry to Get Up

AI imagebasset houndorange catquilt

Under a thick white knit quilt, a lemon-and-white Basset Hound blinks awake, his long ears splayed and his sad, sleepy eyes half open. Right beside him an orange longhaired cat pokes her face out of the folds, her amber eyes still a little drowsy. The blanket is wound around both of them like a cocoon. Behind them a clutter of clothes, a mug and a pair of glasses suggest a cozy, unhurried morning. Even the pillows look like they are in no rush to leave.

We might call them Waldo and Clementine. Waldo's drooping jowls give him the look of someone who would like five more minutes, and Clementine, lying with her chin near his shoulder, seems to agree.

Basset Hounds were bred to follow scent trails for hours, which is why they have such long ears and a strong sense of smell. They are mellow, friendly and often a bit stubborn, and they love food, so watch their weight to protect their long backs. Their ears need regular cleaning to prevent infections. Cats often sleep up to fifteen hours a day and enjoy snuggling with warm companions. If you share your bed with pets, wash the bedding often, keep nails trimmed, and be sure nobody gets tangled in a blanket that is too heavy or loose.

Waldo and Clementine have clearly agreed that morning can wait a little longer.
