The Dachshund Led the Way and Somebody Small Followed Every Step
The gravel path along the fence is a good one for walking, and a sleek black and tan Dachshund is leading the way. He trots with his nose forward and his long body low, glancing back over one shoulder now and then. A few steps behind, a pink piglet follows in his tracks, snout lowered, ears flopping, one hoof lifted mid-step. Weeds grow along the fence and a few fallen leaves dot the stones.
Dachshunds are confident little dogs who are happy to lead, even when the follower is bigger than they are. They were bred to hunt underground, which gives them a bold personality and a fine nose. Walking on gravel is a nice workout for paws, but check for sharp stones, especially on very small feet. For piglets, short walks like this are good for exercise and curiosity, and pigs are known to follow a trusted friend, much like ducklings. Always stay close, and keep them in a fenced area so nobody wanders off. Talk to your vet if you are unsure what exercise a young pig needs.
We will call the little follower Pearl. She is learning fast that the Dachshund knows all the good smells on the property. He does not mind the company at all, and every so often he slows down, just enough to let her catch up. It is a small walk, but it feels like a big adventure for both.
