An Autumn Leaf Pile Turned Into a Kitten Playground
Autumn has dropped its whole wardrobe on the floor, and the party is in full swing. A black dog with a white chest and soft brown eyes lies in a pile of gold and orange leaves, head lifted and ears relaxed. Four kittens are in play mode around him: an orange one pouncing at a leaf, a grey one clinging to a tail, a black and white one tumbling, and a cream one calmly watching. A sofa and a pair of socks sit in the background.
Dogs adopted from rescues often have a special understanding of what it means to find a gentle home, and many turn out to be wonderful with kittens. Mixed-breed dogs can have a wide range of temperaments, so it pays to introduce animals slowly and give each one space. Leaves are fun to play in, but be careful about what hides in them, such as thorns, wet mold, or things your pet should not eat. Kittens also tend to swat and pounce at moving objects, which is a natural way for them to build coordination. Your vet can help with questions about safe play.
The dog does not rush. He lies still, tail brushing the leaves, and lets the kittens treat him as the best playground ever. A leaf crunches, a kitten flips, and everyone looks around in delight. This is how afternoons are supposed to go, noisy and golden, with plenty of rustle.
