A Great Dane Rested His Chin on the Basket and Would Not Budge
A harlequin Great Dane has laid his long chin on the rim of a wicker laundry basket, and he is not leaving. Inside, nestled among cream-colored towels, five kittens sleep in a heap: orange, grey tabby, calico, and two others tucked deep. Their faces are tucked into each other's fur. The Dane's black and white patches seem to melt into the warm light. Behind them, a laundry detergent bottle and a hoodie hang in the cluttered room.
Fresh-from-the-dryer towels are a kitten favorite, because warmth means safety and comfort. Many kittens love a basket nest, and a soft, clean lining is a great choice. Make sure no strings, loose threads, or small objects can be swallowed. Great Danes are among the gentlest large breeds, famously patient and sensitive. Because of their size, though, supervision is vital whenever they are near very small animals, even when they mean well. Talk to your vet about safe sleeping setups for kittens.
The Dane keeps his head very still, as if even a sigh might wake the basket. His eyes follow one small paw as it twitches in a dream. Somewhere in the house, a dryer buzzes, and no one moves. This is the quietest, warmest spot in the house, and the biggest dog on the floor is happily keeping the secret. When the kittens finally wake, they will stretch, yawn, and spill out onto the floor, but that is a problem for later.
