The Calico Was Watching the Rain. The Puppy Had a Better Idea.
Rain is streaking down the big window, and two small watchers have claimed the best seat in the house. A calico cat with patches of orange, black, and white sits upright, eyes fixed on the glass. Beside her, a golden puppy we'll call Biscuit rests his chin on the sill, drooping ears and half-closed eyes saying he is more than ready for a nap. A knitted blanket is bunched behind them, and the gray afternoon outside makes the room feel even snugger.
Cats are natural window watchers. Moving raindrops, passing birds, and swaying branches give an indoor cat plenty to follow, and a safe perch by the glass is a simple way to keep a house cat mentally busy. A sturdy windowsill or a cushioned shelf works well. Just make sure the window is closed or has a secure screen, since cats can move fast when something catches their eye.
Puppies, on the other hand, tire out quickly. Young dogs often sleep for most of the day, and they tend to drop off wherever they happen to be, which is why Biscuit looks so peaceful here. Many puppies also settle more easily when a calm older companion is nearby. If you are introducing a puppy to a cat, let the cat choose her own distance and keep early meetings short and relaxed. Treats and quiet praise help both animals link each other with good things.
For now, the rain can keep falling. The calico has her lookout, the puppy has his warm spot, and neither seems to be in any hurry to be anywhere else.
