An Abyssinian Who Never Sits Still Finally Sat Still Under the Tree

Apples hang from the branches overhead, and underneath them the afternoon has gone quiet. A cinnamon Abyssinian lies stretched on a flat stone with her large ears tilted and her eyes half shut. Her warm, ruddy coat looks like it was made for autumn. The golden puppy, Biscuit, sleeps right next to her with his nose on the ground and a few fallen leaves scattered nearby.

Abyssinians are slim, athletic cats with a shiny, ticked coat, which means each hair has bands of color. They are often described as active, curious, and people-oriented, so a restful pose like this one is a rare treat. Most Abys enjoy climbing and exploring, and they do best with plenty of play.

If a yard has fruit trees, a little care helps. Windfall apples are not a problem for most pets in small amounts, but the seeds and core can be an issue, and rotting fruit attracts wasps and can cause stomach upset. Rake up fallen fruit regularly. Shade matters too, since pets can overheat in the sun and always need fresh water close by.

With the leaves rustling and the grass warm, this is the sort of afternoon people wish they could bottle. The Abyssinian has traded her usual energy for a snooze, and the puppy is glad to share it. Even the apples overhead seem to be keeping quiet so as not to wake them.
