The Box Was Supposed to Be for Recycling Until These Two Moved In

The cardboard box was meant to be thrown out. Instead, it has been lined with blue blankets and become home to a grey Sphynx with huge ears and a wrinkled brow. Beside her, Waffles has crammed his body into the corner and rests his head on the rim, eyes closed. Behind them, a stuffed duck, a scattering of socks and a leafy plant make it feel like a house where everyone is allowed to nap wherever they please.

Cats love boxes. Their love is so well known that people leave boxes out on purpose, and there is a reason for it. A box gives a cat a small, enclosed spot where she can hide and observe, which helps her feel secure. The cardboard also insulates, which is especially welcome for a hairless cat like a Sphynx who tends to feel the cold. If you are offering a box, remove any tape, staples or plastic that could be chewed, and keep an eye out for puppies who might try to eat the cardboard.

Waffles has learned the box rule the easy way, which is that if the cat has found something good, it might be worth joining her. The two of them look like they have every intention of keeping their new home. Somewhere nearby, a roll of tape and a pair of scissors are probably wondering what happened to their box.
