A Silver Tabby Rolled Over and the Puppy Took the Hint

AI imageamerican shorthairpuppybelly nap

The silver tabby is lying on his back with all four paws up, and he has never looked more relaxed. On his round belly, curled in a perfect little ball, is Waffles the puppy, fast asleep. The cat's yellow eyes look up toward the camera in an upside-down gaze, his pink nose and white whiskers on display. A basket of towels, a pair of socks and a half-folded pile of laundry sit behind them on the wooden floor.

A cat who shows his belly is usually showing trust, though it does not always mean he wants it rubbed. Many cats lie on their backs simply because they feel safe and comfortable. American Shorthairs are sturdy, friendly cats that often get along with dogs and children. When a puppy sleeps on a cat, keep an eye out to make sure the cat is truly okay with it. Some cats will happily share, while others will wriggle away. A cat who is purring, relaxed and soft is a good sign that he is happy about the arrangement.

From the look of him, the silver tabby does not mind being a pillow. The puppy is warm, the floor is cozy, and the laundry will wait. It is an easy kind of friendship with plenty of room for naps. Nobody is in a hurry to fold the laundry, since it is a lot more fun to watch a puppy rise and fall with every purr.
