Two Friends at the Window Had Their Eyes on the Pond
Outside the old window, a pond glimmers under a cloudy sky, ringed with reeds and a few lily pads. Two watchers have taken front-row seats. A white cat with pale green eyes sits upright on the ledge, ears forward. Waffles lies in front of her with his chin on the worn white paint and his gaze following hers toward the water. A tote bag, a knitted hat and a gray sweater are piled below, and the ledge is dusted with a few dry leaves.
Watching the outdoors is good mental exercise for both cats and dogs. Birds on the water, ripples and moving reeds give them something to follow, and this kind of enrichment can keep indoor pets calmer and happier. A window seat with a cushion is an easy way to provide it. If you live near a pond or lake, remember that water can be risky: young puppies may not be strong swimmers, and algae in warm ponds can be harmful to pets. Keep them away from stagnant water, and talk to your vet if your pet drinks from it.
The pond is still, the sky is soft, and the pair seem perfectly content simply to watch. It is a quiet, gentle way to spend an afternoon, and no one is in a hurry to go anywhere. The ledge is a little worn and the paint is a little chipped, but it is clearly the best seat in the house.
