The Fire Burned Low, and a Tiny Yorkie Fell Asleep on Clover
The wood stove has burned down to a glow, and in front of it a blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier lies fast asleep on a chunky knit blanket. His silky head is resting against Clover, the small brown rabbit, who sits tucked close with her eyes just beginning to close. A basket of firewood stands behind them, a window glows softly, and the wooden floor creaks with years of use.
Yorkshire Terriers are small dogs with a lot of spirit, and their long, silky coats need regular brushing to stay tangle-free. Because they are tiny, they can feel the cold and often love a warm blanket. A fireplace or stove is a lovely thing, but it is also a hazard for pets. Use a sturdy guard, keep pets a safe distance from hot surfaces and never let them near open flames or sparks. Rabbits can overheat easily, so a spot that is warm but not hot is best, with cool floor space nearby. Your vet can suggest how to keep your pets comfortable in cold weather.
There is a deep peace in a scene like this. The Yorkie sleeps with the abandon of a dog who has no worries, and Clover is a calm little anchor next to him. The faint smell of woodsmoke seems to hang in the air. Outside, it may be cold, but in this little corner of the cabin the evening is soft and slow, and nobody has to do anything at all.
