A Yellow Lab and Eight Ducklings, All Warm by the Wood Stove
In front of a black wood stove, a yellow Labrador has settled onto a braided rug with his eyes closed and his chin resting on the floor. Stretching out beside him is a long row of ducklings, eight in all, lying flat in a perfectly straight line with their bills tucked down. The stove glows with orange embers, firewood is stacked along the wall, and the rustic room is full of blankets, mugs and boots. The fur of the dog and the down of the ducklings match in warm shades of gold.
Labrador Retrievers are famously friendly, loyal and eager to please, which is why they are among the most popular family dogs. They were bred to retrieve waterfowl for hunters, so they usually have a soft mouth and a love of birds and water, but their instincts mean supervision is important around ducklings. Ducklings need a controlled heat source in a brooder, not a stove or fire, since they can overheat or be hurt. If you have a Lab, give him plenty of exercise and training, and ask your vet for advice on introducing pets to young birds safely.
The Lab looks totally at peace, with a warm fire and a friendly line of tiny yellow neighbors. It is the sort of cozy evening you can almost feel from here.
