The Yorkie Curled Into a Crescent, and Five Kittens Fit Inside
On a faded woven rug beside a weathered porch step, the Yorkshire Terrier has curled up in a tight crescent with her eyes closed. Cuddled inside the curve of her body are five tiny kittens, ginger, gray, charcoal and tabby, asleep in a cozy cluster. The rug has blue and cream patterns, and soft light falls on the peeling paint and old wood behind them. The little dog's gold paws are tucked under her chin, and the kittens are almost hidden in her silky fur. It looks like a nap that has been going on for a while.
Yorkies are tiny dogs with a big heart, and many are surprisingly protective of their loved ones. Their silky hair is more like human hair than typical dog fur, and it grows continuously, so regular grooming matters. Very young kittens spend most of their day sleeping, and they need warmth, food and gentle care. If you see a litter like this, make sure that the area is clean, dry and draft-free. A vet can check the kittens for health and offer advice on feeding. Even a very gentle dog should be supervised around newborns, because they are so small and fragile.
There is no sound in this picture, only a gentle hush. The little dog looks like she knows she is the center of a small, warm world, and she is holding it together.
