A Schnauzer Patrolled the Fence Line With a Very Small Crew
Whiskers first, as always. A salt and pepper Miniature Schnauzer stands by a weathered wooden fence, his bushy eyebrows and beard making him look like a very small, very serious farmer. Beside him on the grass, a line of ducklings is marching along the fence, each one stepping carefully over the clover. The sky is gentle and the grass is damp, as if the morning chores have just begun. A few dandelions nod beside the fence posts, and a distant barn roof peeks above the trees.
Miniature Schnauzers were originally bred as farm dogs to keep barns free of rats, and that background shows in their alert, busy personalities. They are smart, bold and talkative, and they need regular exercise and something to do. Their wiry coat sheds little but needs regular grooming to stay tidy, and that famous beard collects crumbs and water, so a quick wipe after meals helps.
Because of their ratting background, some Schnauzers have a strong urge to chase small, fast-moving things. Gradual, supervised introductions are best when one meets a small bird, and a reliable recall command is worth practicing in a fenced area first.
Today, though, the only job on the schedule is walking the fence line. The Schnauzer keeps an eye on the horizon, and the ducklings keep an eye on him. A fence is a pretty good guide when you are small. Tidy whiskers, tidy ducklings, tidy morning.
