The Corgi and the Ducklings Both Had Questions About the Chickens

On the other side of the wire fence, a flock of chickens is scratching and strutting in the yard, and on this side a red and white Corgi has parked herself to watch, ears erect and gaze focused. Right beside her, a row of ducklings stands pressed against the wire, looking through with equal fascination. A bucket and a few clay pots sit nearby, and the evening light lies low across the grass.

Corgis are natural herders, so the sight of chickens can fire up some old instincts. They are alert, bright and a little bossy, and they may try to herd just about everything, from sheep to children. That is a charming trait, but it needs guidance. Practicing a firm recall and rewarding calm behavior around other animals makes life much easier.

Chickens and ducks can live together in a backyard, but they have different needs. Ducks love water and tend to make a wet mess, while chickens prefer dry, dusty areas. A safe, separate space for little ducklings is a good choice until they are bigger. If you keep poultry, it is also important to wash your hands after handling birds.

For now, everyone is just watching through the wire, and the chickens are carrying on as though they have no idea. The best shows are the free ones.
