A Tiny Yorkie Held Perfectly Still While a Line of Ducklings Hiked Over Her

Patience is a virtue, and this Yorkshire Terrier has plenty. She lies flat on the wooden floor with her silky blue and tan coat spread around her and her chin resting low, while a line of ducklings picks its way across her back like hikers on a very fluffy hill. Behind them, a water bottle, a basket and a heap of clothes mark an ordinary, lived-in room. A single duckling has reached the top of her back and stands there proudly, like a tiny explorer on a summit.

Yorkshire Terriers are small dogs with big, confident personalities. Originally bred to catch rats in mills and mines, they are lively and brave, and they often act as if they weigh a lot more than they do. Because they are so tiny, they can be hurt by rough handling or by playmates that are too large or too energetic, so gentle, supervised play is best. Their long, fine hair needs regular brushing.

Dogs show tolerance with their body language. A relaxed, loose posture with soft eyes and a calm breath tells you they are comfortable. A stiff body, a frozen stare or a lip lick can signal stress, and it is a good moment to step in and give the dog some space.

This little terrier looks perfectly at ease, and the ducklings seem to know they have found a gentle friend. Some of the smallest dogs have the largest hearts. Gentleness is a very big talent.
