Two Porch Sitters Who Never Seem to Be in a Hurry
On a worn blue-grey porch step, a big black Maine Coon sits tall and fluffy, tail curled around her paws, while a brown puppy sprawls right against her side with his chin on the edge of the stair. She stares off to the left with glowing yellow-green eyes, the picture of a guard on duty. The puppy's soft droopy ears and wrinkled brow give him a thoughtful look, as if he is deciding whether to take his job seriously. Behind them are clay pots, a canvas tote bag, sneakers and a watering can, all the cheerful clutter of a busy garden porch.
Maine Coons are among the largest domestic cat breeds, known for thick shaggy coats, tufted ears and a friendly, easygoing nature. Many are described as dog-like because they follow their people from room to room and often get along with other pets. Their long fur does best with regular brushing, especially around the belly and behind the ears where mats can form. A porch is a pleasant spot to watch the world, but it helps to keep cats and puppies on a leash or harness outdoors, or in a fenced area, so a sudden squirrel does not send either of them running.
The two of them make a nice pair of porch sitters. One is calm and watchful, the other is learning from her example, and neither is in any hurry to go anywhere.
