The Basset Puppy and the Pony Had Nothing to Do but Nap
Two sets of heavy eyelids, one porch rug, and no plans for the afternoon. A tricolor Basset Hound puppy sprawls on a woven striped rug with his chin on the floor, his long velvet ears pooling around his face and his eyes squeezed shut. Beside him, Pepper the pony has folded his legs and rests his head against the puppy, his fuzzy cream coat as soft as a teddy bear's.
The porch has weathered siding, a wooden door with a black knob, and a clay pot of green herbs. Warm light spills across the rug and over the pony's shaggy mane. Neither sleeper has moved a muscle since they lay down.
Basset Hound puppies are famously sleepy and affectionate, with long ears and wrinkled faces that suit their gentle expression. Their ears need regular cleaning because the folds can trap moisture, and their long backs need care, so avoid letting them jump from high places. They also love food and can gain weight easily, so ask your vet about portions. Ponies are herd animals that do best with company, and a calm puppy can be a good companion. As with any pairing, supervision matters, because a sleepy pony shifting its legs can easily hurt a small puppy.
The porch is quiet, the rug is warm, and the nap goes on. Some friendships are built mostly from snoring.
