A Small Leader Took a Pony for a Walk Through the Wildflowers

AI imageaustralian shepherd puppyponywildflower meadow

Out in the meadow, a small leader is taking his job very seriously. A black tricolor Australian Shepherd puppy trots through the grass with a blue leash connecting him to his friend, his pink tongue out and his eyes bright. Right beside him walks Pepper, the brown and white pony, wearing a leather halter and a calm, patient look.

The meadow is dotted with daisies, clover, and tiny purple flowers, and a rustic wooden fence runs along the back. Soft grass swishes against their legs. The puppy may be smaller than the pony's front leg, but he leads with all the confidence in the world.

Australian Shepherds are intelligent herding dogs that love having a job. Puppies are already quick to learn, and they are happiest when they have both exercise and mental challenges. Their herding instincts can show up early, so channel them with training games and not with livestock. Introducing a young dog to horses or ponies should be done slowly, on leash, with an experienced adult nearby, since a startled pony can kick. Wildflower meadows are lovely, but check for plants that could be harmful and for ticks after outdoor adventures. Your vet can help with tick and plant safety.

The pair wander along without a care. When you walk with a friend, it hardly matters who is leading.
