The Wheelbarrow Was Meant for Dirt. The Great Dane Had Other Cargo in Mind.
The wheelbarrow was meant for hauling soil, but today it is carrying passengers. A harlequin Great Dane with black patches splashed across a white coat sits upright in the back, wearing a leather collar and a thoughtful frown. In front of him, a small brown-and-white calf rests her chin on the rim like she is waiting for a driver. Flower pots, a watering can and a wooden fence fill out the backyard behind them.
Great Danes are among the tallest dog breeds, yet they are usually called gentle giants. Even so, they grow fast and can be clumsy, and their large frames mean they need good food, joint-friendly exercise and a soft place to sleep. Their lifespans tend to be shorter than those of smaller dogs, so regular checkups with your vet matter.
Size differences are part of the charm here, but they also call for care. A huge dog should never be left to play roughly with a small animal, since a single wag of that tail or a playful shove could knock a calf over. Calm sitting, like this, is the safest kind of friendship.
If anyone is going to push this wheelbarrow, it will be a person with a lot of patience and a snack. For now Clover and her tall pal seem perfectly happy to sit still and admire the yard from their seats.
