Two Curious Faces Appeared Over the Edge of the Garden Bed
Two curious faces are lined up at the edge of a raised garden bed, as if they are inspecting the work of the gardener. A white-and-tan Jack Russell Terrier looks straight at the lens with his ears folded and his dark eyes bright, and beside him a brown-and-white calf rests her chin on the weathered board with her wet pink nose just above the soil. Tiny green seedlings, a flowerpot and a wooden fence fill the background.
Dogs love to investigate garden beds, and Jack Russells, who were bred to dig for small game, are especially fond of it. If your dog loves the garden, it helps to know that some popular plants and garden products are toxic to pets. Cocoa mulch, fertilizers, slug bait and bulbs of plants like tulips and daffodils can be harmful. If a pet gets into something, call your vet right away.
A raised bed is a handy way to keep gardens tidy and pets out of trouble, especially if it has a low fence or some chicken wire around it. Young seedlings are also delicate, so a gentle reminder to stay out of the bed saves both vegetables and tempers.
For now, the two are only looking. Clover appears to be wondering whether anything green is edible, and her terrier friend is probably thinking about digging.
