A Small Shih Tzu Looked Up, Way Up, at His Tall Garden Companion
The garden is quiet and a little misty, and two explorers have wandered in to look around. A small brindle Shih Tzu stands among the lettuce and carrot tops, tilting his shaggy face up with curiosity, while a tall, brown-and-white calf bends down to look at him with her ears forward. A wooden fence post and a hazy gray sky sit behind the rows, and the soil is damp and dark.
Vegetable gardens are full of interesting smells for a dog, but they also have hazards. Onions, garlic and chives are harmful to dogs, and so are tomato leaves and stems. Fertilizers and pesticides should be stored well out of reach, and a low fence is a good way to keep pets out of the beds. If your dog eats something you are unsure about, call your vet.
Shih Tzus are curious, social little dogs, usually happy to follow their people around the yard. They enjoy a gentle stroll more than a long run, and a shorter walk in cool weather suits them well. Keep their face fur trimmed so they can see where they are going and avoid irritation.
Whatever the two are looking for, it is probably not salad. Clover seems happy simply to be exploring, and her small friend is perfectly content to lead. Rows of lettuce make a very fine adventure when you are small and curious.
