The Collie Gave the Lamb a Ride Across the Yard Without a Fuss
Something unusual is crossing the yard: a red and white Border Collie walking with a small white lamb balanced on her back. The lamb stands with her four hooves planted and her head up like a tiny captain. The collie's face is focused and calm, mouth closed, eyes ahead. A weathered fence, scattered leaves and some forgotten garden items fill the background. Neither seems worried, and the collie moves with a steady, careful gait that suggests she has done this before. A dry leaf drifts down and lands on the lamb's back, and she barely notices.
Border Collies are often called the world's best herding dogs, and they have an uncanny ability to read livestock and move carefully around them. They are extremely intelligent and need regular exercise and mental work, or they can become restless. Carrying a lamb is of course a silly image, and it's not something to encourage in real life, because a fall could hurt a small animal. If you want to let a dog and a farm animal bond safely, keep encounters calm, supervised and on the ground, and reward quiet behavior with praise. Rewarding calm behavior builds trust over time, and it makes outdoor time more enjoyable for everyone.
The yard is big, the lamb has the best view, and the collie doesn't seem to mind the extra passenger.
