A Jack Russell Terrier Stands Guard Over a Napping Lamb
Not a sound is made in the room as a tricolor Jack Russell Terrier leans over the edge of a wicker basket, studying the sleeping lamb inside. Dumpling is curled on a soft cream blanket with her eyes closed and her nose tucked down, completely at ease. The little dog's brown ears are folded back and his alert eyes are watching her closely. A plain wall and the corner of another blanket are all that show behind. For a terrier who is usually in motion, he has become remarkably still, and it looks like he has taken on a very serious job. The terrier's nose twitches whenever the lamb sighs in her sleep.
Jack Russell Terriers were bred for fox hunting, and they are full of energy, intelligence and determination. They need daily exercise, mental challenges and consistent training, and they can be clever escape artists. Seeing one lie still near a sleeping animal is unusual, and it shows how strongly some dogs bond with their companions. Even so, a terrier's strong chase instincts mean that dogs and young animals should always be supervised when together, and never left alone. A basket lined with a washable blanket is a good resting spot for small animals, and it should be big enough to stretch out and warm enough to feel secure. Dogs often watch over sleeping companions without being asked, and a calm household makes the nap easier.
The guard doesn't blink, and the sleeper doesn't wake.
