A Basset Hound and a Bunny Drifted Off on the Porch Hammock
On a rope hammock swaying on the back porch, a lemon and white Basset Hound lies with his long ears spread across the netting and his heavy eyes closed. A small brown bunny has nestled into the crook of his body, her ears folded back, also asleep. A pair of slippers rests on the floor below, and a garden hose and watering can sit in the background in the late afternoon light.
Basset Hounds are famous for their low, long bodies, droopy ears, and relaxed temperament. They were bred to track scents, so they are patient and persistent but also very laid-back at home. Their long ears and skin folds need regular cleaning to prevent irritation. They are also prone to gaining weight, so portions and gentle exercise matter, and talk to your vet about what is right for your dog. Because of their long backs, avoid making them jump on and off high places. A hammock may look relaxing but a low, stable one is best for a dog, and a supervised nap is always safest.
The Basset's expression is the very picture of peace. The bunny is so small beside him that she disappears into his fur. Neither seems to mind the gentle sway of the hammock, which probably helps them sleep even deeper. If anyone ever wonders what the perfect afternoon looks like, this might be it.
