A Calico Cat Shared Her Laundry Basket With Four Fluffy Ducklings

A wicker laundry basket lined with warm towels has become a very exclusive hotel. A calico cat lies curled along the left edge with her head resting on the rim and her eyes half-closed, her orange, black, and white coat looking like a patchwork quilt. Beside her, four tiny yellow ducklings are snuggled into a fold of towel, heads tucked and bills turned toward the sleepy cat. Socks and blankets are piled on the floor by the window, and the whole room smells of fresh laundry and sunshine.

Cats love snug, enclosed spots such as baskets, boxes, and bins. Squeezing into a small space can help them feel secure, and warm fabric adds to the appeal. Calico cats are almost always female, and their patchy coats come from a genetic quirk, though their personalities are as varied as any other cat's. Ducklings also crave warmth in their first weeks, and a soft towel can feel like heaven. In real life, though, baby birds should stay in a safe, heated brooder and never be left alone with a cat. A vet can explain how to keep ducklings warm and protected.

The basket makes a pleasing little world of its own, and everyone inside has agreed on the rules: stay close, keep warm, and do not wake anyone. The calico's low purr could be the soundtrack to a perfect afternoon.
