A Ruby Cavalier Walks Slowly So Five Ducklings Can Stay Aboard
Strolling carefully across a sunny lawn, a deep-red Cavalier King Charles Spaniel carries a very unusual cargo. Five yellow ducklings are perched in a row along his back, as steady as little passengers on a train. His long ears swing with each step, and his dark eyes stay fixed on the grass ahead, as though he's concentrating very hard on not tipping anyone off. Dry grass crunches softly underfoot, and the evening air looks warm and still.
Cavaliers are among the most easygoing of the small breeds, known for a sweet nature and a love of being with people. They are quite happy to stroll slowly, which makes them well suited to gentle jobs like this one. The ruby coloring means a solid rich red coat. Real ducklings can't hang on to a moving dog's back safely, so this is a delightful sight best left to the imagination, with actual introductions kept calm, low, and supervised. A short, calm walk is more than enough exercise for a spaniel his size.
Behind them, a wooden fence and a few leafy plants frame the backyard like a stage. The late-day light sets the dog's fur glowing the color of dark honey.
The row of ducklings sits perfectly in line, heads turned in the same direction, as if they know exactly where they're headed. The spaniel, ever polite, takes the slowest and smoothest steps he can.
