A Frenchie and a Black Cat Dozed by the Wood Stove Like One Big Shadow
In front of a black iron wood stove, a black and white French Bulldog sleeps with his face resting on a knitted blanket and one white paw tucked under his chin. Curled right against him, a black cat is just a smooth shadow with her head hidden, so the two seem to melt into one dark and white shape. A basket of firewood, a potted plant, and a plaid blanket complete the cabin corner. The room smells of woodsmoke and old pine, and the plank floor is warm underfoot.
A wood stove is a wonderful source of comfort in winter, but it needs safety precautions around pets. Keep animals from touching hot surfaces, use a sturdy guard, and never leave them unsupervised near it. Cats love warmth and often curl up on or near heat, and flat-faced dogs like French Bulldogs prefer a cool spot, so give them room to move away if they get too warm. Fresh water nearby is always a good idea.
The dog's closed eyes and the cat's tucked head say that the day's work is done. They're entirely relaxed. Their breathing is slow and perfectly in sync.
A quiet room, a warm blanket, and a friend who is happy to share the heat. It's a simple recipe, but it works every time. The fire, low and steady, keeps the night at bay.
