A Schnauzer Puppy Peeks Out From the Quilt Next to a Dozing Pony
The morning is just beginning, and a green-and-white checked quilt has been tugged up to cover two sleepy friends. A gray Miniature Schnauzer puppy peeks out from the folds with his bushy eyebrows and whiskery beard, looking alert and slightly puzzled. Next to him, a fuzzy brown pony rests his chin on the bedding with his eyes nearly closed, still deep in a dream. A cluttered shelf with a mug, a pair of jeans and a stuffed rabbit sits behind them. It looks like the first lazy moment of a weekend.
Miniature Schnauzers are sturdy, clever little dogs with a distinctive beard and eyebrows. They were bred as farm ratters in Germany, so they are alert, energetic and often quite vocal. They tend to bond closely with their families and benefit from regular grooming, since their wiry coat needs trimming and brushing. Most dogs enjoy burrowing under blankets, because it recreates the feeling of a den, and it helps them stay warm. Ponies are different sleepers; they usually rest standing up, and only lie down for short stretches when they feel completely safe.
This pair looks as if they've decided that getting up can wait. The puppy is awake but not in a hurry, and the pony is still dreaming. There's a kind of comfort in a morning like that, where the best plan is to stay exactly where you are for a few more minutes.
