A Basset Hound Shares His Porch Hammock With a Little White Cat

A canvas hammock hangs from a porch, and it holds the sleepiest pair in the neighborhood. A lemon-and-white Basset Hound lies with his long ears spread across the fabric and his heavy jowls resting on his paw. Curled up against his chest, a small white cat sleeps with her face tucked in and her ears relaxed. Potted plants, a pair of old sneakers and a wooden railing frame the porch, and soft evening light spreads over everything. Both look as if nothing will wake them before supper.

Basset Hounds are famous for their droopy ears, sad eyes and amazing sense of smell. They are mellow, friendly dogs that love naps almost as much as they love a good sniff. Because of their long bodies and short legs, they shouldn't be encouraged to jump from tall places, and many owners use ramps or steps. Cats often seek out warm, soft neighbors for their naps, and a dog's body heat makes a very good radiator. Sleeping together can be a sign that two pets trust each other, though it's still wise to give each its own bed.

The hammock gently sags in the middle, which pushes the two a little closer together. Neither one seems to mind. A slow day, a gentle swing and a warm friend nearby are, for these two, the whole plan.
