The Beagle and the Tuxedo Cat Had the Fireplace All to Themselves
A small fire glows behind the hearth, and in front of it a tuxedo cat and a Beagle have pressed their heads together. The cat's white whiskers and nose are tucked into the beagle's cheek, and both of them have their eyes shut. The Beagle's long brown ears and white blaze make him look especially peaceful, and his paws rest on a chunky knit blanket. A lamp with a warm shade glows in the corner, and the whole room looks like a place made for long winter evenings.
Beagles are friendly, sociable dogs that were bred to hunt in packs, which often makes them comfortable around other animals. They love company, and a warm cat is as good a snuggle partner as any. Cats seek out warmth because they are most comfortable in a temperature range that is a bit higher than ours, which is why you find them on laptops, heating vents and sunny floors. If you have a fireplace or wood stove, use a sturdy screen and make sure pets cannot get too close to the heat, sparks or hot surfaces. Never leave an open fire unattended with animals nearby. A blanket in a safe spot a few feet away offers all the coziness with none of the risk. Dogs and cats that nap together are usually showing trust, because sleeping is when animals are at their most vulnerable.
Whatever is on television, whatever the weather outside, these two have decided the evening is for resting. The fire crackles on, and everything is as it should be.
