The Aussie and the Persian Cat Followed the Sunbeam Together

AI imageaustralian shepherdpersian catsunbeam

A bright stripe of sunshine falls across the old wooden floorboards, and two friends are lying in it as if they had arranged it. The red merle Australian Shepherd rests her chin on the floor, her freckled muzzle and amber eyes both soft with contentment. Beside her, a white Persian sits loaf-style with her flat little face and squinted eyes turned toward the light. They are close enough that their fur nearly touches, and the doorway behind them leads into a quiet, shadowy room.

Australian Shepherds are intelligent, energetic herding dogs that need plenty of exercise and mental work, so a moment of stillness like this probably followed a busy morning. Without enough activity, many herding breeds invent their own jobs, which is why long walks and puzzle toys are popular with owners. Persian cats have long, thick coats that need daily brushing to stay free of tangles, and their flat faces mean they should be kept away from overheating. Cats love sunbeams because they are drawn to warmth, and a patch of light on the floor works as a free heating pad. Be sure fresh water is available, and if your pets seem to be panting or restless in the sun, move them to a cooler spot. A shared sunbeam is a very comfortable sign of trust between pets.

The sun will move on across the floor, and the pair will probably shift along with it. Until then, neither one has any place else to be.
