The German Shepherd Made Sure the Little Calico Stayed Warm in the Snow

Snow clings to the ground and the fence behind them, but the calico has found the warmest spot in the yard. The German Shepherd lies curled in a half-circle with one big paw wrapped gently across her back, and his head rests just above hers. His dark brown eyes look out calmly, as if he is on watch. The little calico, with her orange, white and black patches, is pressed against his chest and looks perfectly content.

German Shepherds are loyal, intelligent dogs that are often described as protective of their families. With proper socialization, many live happily with cats. They tend to be eager to work and need regular training and exercise. Cold weather is a good reason to think about outdoor pets: most cats should not be left out in freezing temperatures, and even thick-coated dogs need shelter and limits on time outside. Check paws for ice and salt, make sure fresh water has not frozen, and bring animals indoors when temperatures drop. Cats sometimes seek warmth in unsafe places, such as car engines, so a quick check before starting a car in winter is a good habit. Talk to your vet about how much cold your particular pet can handle.

For now, the calico has a living heater and a bodyguard in one. There are few better ways to spend a winter afternoon.
