The Saint Bernard and the Cat Took Over the Garden Wheelbarrow

The wheelbarrow was probably meant for hauling soil, but today it is carrying something far more valuable. A big red-and-white Saint Bernard sits inside, his wide face calm and a little droopy, and next to him perches a grey Devon Rex cat with huge ears and pale eyes. Behind them, flowerpots line a fence, a watering can rests on the ground and a pair of work gloves lies by the wheel. It is a garden, a very laid-back one, with two supervisors on duty.

Saint Bernards are large, gentle dogs historically associated with mountain rescue. They tend to be patient and good-natured, but their size means they need space, training and supervision around smaller animals. They also drool and shed, so a good brush and a damp cloth are useful. Devon Rex cats are playful and curious, and they like to climb and sit in unusual places. Cats are drawn to containers, boxes and baskets, because enclosed spaces make them feel secure, and a wheelbarrow works nicely. If your pets like to ride in garden equipment, keep them away from tools, fertilizer and chemicals, and be careful with common garden plants that can be harmful to animals. Your vet or a local poison control resource can tell you which plants to avoid.

The garden work can wait. Two friends have taken the best seats, and the tour of the property is about to begin.
