The Dalmatian Puppy Was Clearly in Charge of This Walk
With a red collar, a bouncy stride and a wide, happy grin, the Dalmatian puppy is clearly in charge of this outing. He tugs a rope in his mouth, and at the other end a shaggy brown pony follows along with her ears forward and her mane swinging. Wildflowers dot the grass in pink, white and yellow, and an old clay pot lies on its side behind them. The late sun makes the pup's spots glow.
Dalmatians are athletic, energetic dogs with a long history of running alongside horses and carriages, so a pup and a pony together has a nice historical echo. They need lots of exercise, and puppies in particular can be very bouncy. They respond well to training that is positive and consistent. Be careful if you take a dog and a pony on a walk together. Ropes can tangle legs, so supervision matters, and the dog should never be tied to the pony. Ponies should be led with proper tack and a calm handler. Also check flowers in the meadow: some wildflowers and plants are harmful if eaten by pets. If you are unsure which plants grow in your area, ask a local vet or extension office.
The pup struts ahead, the pony ambles after and the meadow stays bright around them. Not every leader has to be the biggest one.
