The Pony Hopped Onto the German Shepherd Puppy for a Backyard Tour
The pony has rested her front hooves on the back of the German Shepherd puppy, and the puppy is walking across the yard with his head high and his mouth open in a happy pant. Her mane blows in the breeze, and her face has a calm, interested look as if she does this every day. A wooden fence, a toy and a warm porch light glow in the background as evening falls. The puppy's dark mask and big ears give him a serious look, but the wagging expression gives him away.
German Shepherd puppies are intelligent, active and eager to please, and they thrive with training and structure. They grow quickly, and their joints and backs need protection, so puppies should not be asked to carry weight. In real life, no puppy should ever have to support a pony, and ponies are best kept to their own pastures and paddocks. The picture is a charming fantasy, but it does remind us that friendships between species can form when animals are raised together calmly. If you want your dog to be comfortable around farm animals, begin with gentle introductions and always supervise. Keep the dog on a leash and reward calm behavior. A trainer can help with herding instincts, which are strong in many shepherd breeds.
Whatever the destination, the pup seems to be proud of the trip. The pony is happy to be along for the ride.
