In the Shade of the Apple Tree, a Pony and a Big Pup Took a Break
Dappled shade falls on the grass, and apple leaves hang above two resting friends. A tan Great Dane puppy lies with his front paws stretched out and his floppy ears down, studying the pony beside him. The pony has lowered her head almost to the ground, her shaggy forelock draped over her nose and her eyes half closed. A wooden fence, some potted plants and a patch of sun lie behind them, and the whole garden seems to be breathing slowly.
Apple trees are lovely for shade, but the fruit can be a problem for pets. Apples themselves are fine for many dogs and ponies in small slices, but the seeds and cores should be avoided, and fallen fruit can ferment and make animals sick. Great Dane puppies need plenty of rest as they grow, and a shady spot is a good place for a nap. They also need care with exercise, since their joints are developing, so do not overdo it. Ponies often enjoy resting in the shade, though they should always have access to clean water and a safe pasture. Supervise early meetings between dogs and ponies so that nobody gets stepped on or startled. A shared shady afternoon is a sign things are going well.
They have no schedule today. The tree gives the shade, the grass gives the pillow and the friends supply everything else.
