A Lamb Led the Garden Inspection While the Cavalier Kept Watch
There is plenty to see in this garden, and the lamb is leading the investigation. She steps lightly between raised beds, her white fleece clean against the green leaves, and her nose is angled down toward something interesting. The ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel watches from the corner, his bright dark eyes locked on her and his long silky ears hanging forward. Bean poles, wire fencing and rows of herbs fill the space behind them, and the light is soft.
Lambs are curious foragers and will sample just about any green thing within reach, so a vegetable garden is a risky place for them. Some garden plants, like rhubarb leaves, onions and nightshades, can make animals very sick. For a dog, garlic, chives and onions are also a concern. Fencing off your vegetable patch is the best way to keep both animals safe. Cavaliers are friendly, adaptable dogs that enjoy a stroll but are not especially interested in digging, though their noses are quick. Always supervise any garden visits, and clean up chemicals or fertilizers. If your pet eats something questionable, call your vet or poison control right away. A garden is lovely when it is safe for every visitor. Plan the garden layout so that plants animals should avoid stay behind a gate.
The garden inspectors take their job seriously. The vegetables will have to wait for a verdict.
