The Porch Scarecrow Was Keeping Watch. Someone Curled Up Against Him for a Nap.
Dusk has settled over the porch, a lantern glows beside the door, and a little scarecrow with a burlap face, straw hat and blue plaid shirt keeps watch at the top of the steps. Curled right up against his straw-stuffed side is a sleek, warm-brown kitten, eyes squeezed shut, chin resting low and front paws tucked neatly in front. Her coat has a ticked, almost glowing cinnamon tone, and her large ears stay upright even in sleep. A pot of orange mums, a few small pumpkins and gourds and scattered leaves complete the peaceful harvest scene.
That warm, evenly ticked coat and those oversized ears are classic traits of the Abyssinian, one of the oldest known cat breeds. Abyssinians are usually energetic, curious and people-focused, often following their humans around and getting involved in everything. After a busy day of exploring, though, even the liveliest kitten needs plenty of sleep, since young cats spend a large part of their day napping while their bodies grow. Straw decorations like scarecrows are generally fine to snuggle against, but loose straw can be chewed and swallowed, so tidy up any stray pieces.
After a long evening of watching trick-or-treaters, this little one has decided the scarecrow makes a perfect pillow. Even Halloween needs a quiet moment. Sweet dreams, little one, and happy Halloween.
