Someone Cut a Hole in an Old White Sheet, and a Very Small Ghost Appeared

Boo! Or something like it. On a well-worn floral couch, a white sheet has been draped over a small shape, and a hole cut in the front reveals a perfectly round gray face. Two big amber eyes peer out with a startled, slightly offended look, and two fluffy gray paws poke out from beneath the hem. The ghost costume is clearly homemade, and the living room behind it shows the evidence: a basket of laundry, plaid blankets, slippers on the coffee table, and a few orange toys scattered across the floor.

Whoever made this costume got one thing right by leaving the face, and especially the whiskers, uncovered. A cat's whiskers are highly sensitive touch receptors that help it judge spaces, sense nearby objects, and read air movement. Covering or squashing them can be uncomfortable and disorienting, which is one reason many cats dislike hoods and masks. Whiskers should never be trimmed, either. If you dress up a cat for a quick photo, keep the eyes, ears, nose, and whiskers free, never leave the cat alone in the outfit, and remove it at the first sign of stress. A loose sheet is easy for a cat to slip out of, which is a good thing.

This little ghost doesn't look particularly spooky, but she does look like she's planning her escape from under the sheet any second now.

Of all the ghosts haunting the neighborhood this year, this one is definitely the fluffiest.
