The Pumpkins in This Patch Grew Enormous. The Kitten Stayed Very, Very Small.
The pumpkins in this backyard patch have grown enormous, and the little black kitten sitting among them looks smaller than ever. His fluffy coat sticks out in every direction, his ears are tipped with wispy tufts, and his amber eyes glance sideways at the giant orange globes towering around him. Twisting green vines and broad, wilting leaves cover the ground, and a wooden fence and a few fallen leaves mark the edge of the garden.
With that long, shaggy fur and tufted ears, he could grow into a Maine Coon, one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Maine Coons are often called gentle giants for their friendly, easygoing nature and their love of family life. Black cats of every breed take center stage at Halloween, and it's a good time to remember they're simply wonderful pets, not omens. In fact, black cats are considered lucky in some parts of the world. Around the holiday, it's wise to keep black cats, and all cats, safely indoors, both to avoid traffic and crowds and to protect them from anyone who might not treat them kindly.
This little one doesn't know anything about superstitions. All he knows is that the pumpkins are big, the leaves are crunchy, and there's a lot of garden left to explore.
Of all the treasures in the pumpkin patch this year, the best one isn't orange at all.
