Santa's Cookies Were Right There. So Was a Very Curious White Kitten.
The plate is out, the cookies are stacked, and one very fluffy white kitten has arrived to supervise. With its round dark eyes fixed on the nearest chocolate chip cookie, the kitten leans in so close that its whiskers fan out. A few crumbs already dot the wooden table, which suggests the inspection has been going on for a while. Behind the plate, a plaid blanket and some pinecones and little stars hint at a living room ready for Christmas Eve.
Cookie night is a good reminder that human treats and cats do not mix. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, and raisins, macadamia nuts, and the sweetener xylitol can also be dangerous. Cats are not drawn to sweetness the way we are, so this curiosity is probably about the buttery smell and a fresh new object on the table. A cat who likes to investigate counters is common, and the easy fix is a covered dish or a plate set up high once the kitten is awake and nosy. If a pet does swallow something questionable, call your vet right away.
Santa will surely forgive the small nose print near the edge of the plate. We will call this fluffy inspector Snowball, and her verdict seems to be that the cookies smell interesting but are not for her. Sometimes the best part of a holiday treat is just getting to sniff it.
