The Tree Needed a Star, and Somebody Suggested a Kitten
Up, up, up goes a tiny silver-spotted kitten, held gently in a hand beside the Christmas tree, as if it were the official tree topper. Its front paws are curled, its pale belly shows, and its green eyes look at the camera with total calm. A golden star glints just behind its head, and the tree is hung with pinecones, gold balls, and warm lights. In the background, a bright window lights a living room with a couch and a jacket.
Kittens should be held with care. Always support the chest and the back legs, keep them close to your body, and avoid lifting from a height since little ones can wriggle suddenly. Young kittens are used to being carried by their mother by the scruff, but people should never pick them up that way. Gentle handling from the first weeks helps a kitten grow into a confident, friendly cat. Keep sessions short, offer a treat or a cuddle afterward, and let them go when they begin to squirm.
The spots on this kitten, which look like tiny rosettes, are a signature of the Bengal breed, who tend to be energetic and curious. It makes sense that one would end up near the highest branches, since climbing is a favorite hobby. We will call this one Twinkle. The star on the tree has competition tonight.
