The Presents Were Unwrapped, and a Weimaraner Puppy Claimed the Paper
Silver-gray and soft as velvet, a Weimaraner puppy sleeps with its head resting on a heap of crumpled kraft wrapping paper. Its long ears fold over its face, its paws are tucked, and its eyes are shut tight. Around the puppy lies the aftermath of present-opening, with bits of paper, a red ball of yarn, a pair of slippers, and a basket of blankets. Past the mess, a little tree and a few unopened packages stand near a sunny window.
Weimaraners are athletic, intelligent dogs with a striking silvery coat, originally bred for hunting. Even as puppies, they have plenty of energy, which makes a deep nap even more valuable. Because they bond closely with their families, they usually do best with plenty of company, training, and exercise. After a gift-opening session, it is smart to tidy up quickly: wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, and small parts can all be swallowed by a curious pup. A sleeping dog on paper may be adorable, but keep an eye out for chewing once it wakes.
We will call this sleeper Dove, and she looks wonderfully content. The party can carry on without her, because she has found a bed made of crinkled paper. A warm room, a quiet afternoon, and a pile of leftovers are all she needs. It might just be the best nap of the entire holiday.
