He Was Only Supposed to Hold the Lights. Now He Is Wearing Them.

The string lights were supposed to go on the tree. Now they lie in glittering loops all around a curly black Poodle puppy, who rests his chin on the floor and gazes up with the calm look of a dog who regrets nothing. Tiny warm bulbs sparkle across his dark coat, a few strands draped over his back like a shiny scarf. Behind him the room is cozy and a little messy, with a plaid throw on the couch, a few pine sprigs on the coffee table and the soft light of a winter afternoon.

Puppies explore the world with their mouths and paws, and dangling cords look like the best toy ever invented. That makes holiday lights worth a little planning. Keep strings of lights unplugged until you are watching, store spare cords out of reach, and consider tucking wires behind furniture or using cord covers. Chewing on a live cord can cause serious injury, and swallowed pieces of wire or plastic are a problem for the vet. Poodles are very smart and eager to learn, which helps: a firm 'leave it' and plenty of chew toys can redirect all that curiosity before it turns into trouble.

For now the lights are off and the puppy is safe, which means this is just a charming scene of a curly little dog dressed in sparkle. Somewhere nearby, someone is quietly deciding whether to untangle him or just take a moment to smile first.
